How to celebrate Christmas in the Lakes and surrounds
Picture this: it's 7am, snow is gliding down outside, and you're all bundled up in a cosy double bed on your getaway in the Lakes. There's only a few days until Christmas and you're full of festive spirit - but where do you celebrate? Are there activities nearby? Are some places more Christmassy than others?
With Christmas becoming one of the biggest events in the annual calendar it's important to celebrate it properly. And part of those celebrations is the events that lead up to the big day! We've picked some of our favourites to get the festive season started and ensure you have a very jolly holiday.
Best for Adults:
Live Music & Festive Afternoon Tea, Inn on the Lake
If a sophisticated Christmas is what you're after look no further. Arguably the perfect festive treat for you and a loved one, experiencing a festive Afternoon Tea whilst overlooking some stunning scenes and live music. Karen West, a talented pianist, will be putting the final touches to the atmosphere to make the experience unforgettable. Book you tickets here.
Best for Families:
Holker Winter Market
We're not saying we only went for the mulled wine... but the mulled wine was pretty amazing.
Last year we personally tested the beautifully rustic delights of the Holker Winter Market. It takes a lot to get us out of the house when it's cold and wet outside, however this market was more than enough to put a spring in our step and help us stock up on Christmas goodies and presents for the whole family.
The fact that almost everything is local, handmade, or both makes the market a wonderful experience full of things that are unique and far away from high street finds. The live music really brightened everyone's mood up too and made it feel like Christmas was well and truly on its way despite the market being in November!
Tickets are only £3 (kiddies go free, and so is parking), and dogs are welcome too!
Best for Young Kids:
Santa Express, Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway
Choo choo! All aboard the Santa Express to meet Santa, his elves, and get your hands on some amazing goodies along the way. Join Santa as he travels from Ravenglass to Dalegarth to his secret grotto where Christmas delights await. You get a drink and mince pie too - and there's even an option to include a festive lunch! Book your tickets here.
Best for Couples:
Glass Blowing Xmas Bauble Experiences, Cumbria Crystal
A Christmas tree adorned with your very own hand-blown glass baubles is a luxury few of us can ascribe to. The process is easy to learn, and great for those just wanting to give it a go. You even get to watch the masters at work too!
If a bauble isn't for you then Cumbria Crystal have so many other items to make including vases, tumblers, and more! Perfect for couples to create something lasting as a memory of their day. Find out more here.
Best for Adventurers:
Guided Alpaca Walks
Although many think the Lake District is solely a place to walk alpacas - hopefully this list has shown you there's a few other options to hand. But for those adventurers that still want that instagramable experience, it's definable not one to miss. Alpacaly Ever After is an amazing company based in Keswick that lets you and some mates go for a stroll or hike (or even just a meet and greet) with a lovely lot of Alpacas #NotToMiss. See more here.
Best for Foodies:
Taste Cumbria: Cockermouth Christmas Market
Ahh Christmas Food Markets. Both the highlight of our year, and it's downfall as our weighing scales judge us for the remaining few days...
The Taste Cumbria Food markets are unlike any other due to their sheer range of products and tasting options that make an appearance. If you are a foodie and love a good day out - then the Taste Cumbria Cockermouth Christmas Market will be taking place from the 7 - 8 December (free entry!)
We hope that gives you some food for thought on some festive ideas to do this Christmas season. So as the weather gets colder and the diary begins to fill up make sure to make some time for these local favourites and you'll have the perfect recipe for success! Don't know where to stay? No worries! We have a few places in mind which offer a range of accomodation from Glamping Pods, Lodges, Cottages, and Apartments.
